I don’t want to tell people what they should think about. If that’s the time you set aside to improve your odds of finding a new source of income, you probably should focus on that.
Here’s what I think about in those sessions and what anyone could also ponder during theirs.
What people buy / pay money for to get?
Of course, there are two main categories: goods and services. I like to see knowledge as a separate, third category.
Knowledge is everything you know and what people might want to learn from you. If you could transfer it to them without handing them something tangible (like a book, or notes, or a digital file, or a recording) or without meeting them or talking to them (in person or remotely), or showing them something (video, presentation) we could say that knowledge itself is a separate category. Practically however it is sold as a book or a course, or a lecture (or a series of lectures and courses referred to as education), so we could also say that it should be filed under one of the other two categories (goods or services). But I like to think about it as a separate category, because when I think about it that way it is easier for me to focus on it. I don’t think about goods and services in general, I think about what I know (what kind of knowledge or know-how I have) and I can come up with concrete ideas what I could offer people. Whereas if I think about it as goods or services it kinda loses its distinctiveness. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I do know that knowledge is special in this regard and that most goods and services we sell are not sold with the intention to transfer knowledge or know-how.
Now that I know that there are these three categories I can be more specific and ask myself what it is I can sell to people.
Is there something I already have and which I can sell to people? What other goods could I sell to people (what does make sense, what doesn’t make sense and why, what is doable, what isn’t doable today but could be — what would need to happen so that I could sell those goods)? These kinds of questions.
Similar thing. Is there something I can start selling to people today? What other services could I sell to people (what does make sense, what doesn’t make sense and why, what is doable, what isn’t doable today but could be — what would need to happen so that I could sell those services)?
Again, similar thing. Is there something I know / can do (even on a basic level, or well) that I can start teaching to people today in exchange for money? What other things could I teach to people in exchange for money (what does make sense, what doesn’t make sense and why, what is doable, what isn’t doable today but could be — what would need to happen so that I could teach those things to people in exchange for money)?
